Adam Mohamed – A Ballymun Blend
About Adam
Adam Mohamed is a poet from Ballymun. He began writing poetry in 2020 during the pandemic by writing and releasing a spoken word poem ‘Untitled’, detailing the complexities of growing up mixed race/religion in a working class area. This piece went viral, and helped launch Adam’s career. Untitled has since been taught on both the Junior and Leaving Certificate curriculums.
Adam has since developed his craft to include music and is currently working on a debut album with funding from the Basic Income for Artists pilot. He has collaborated on works with Heinken, Census, Tullamore Dew, Google, and GOAL Next Gen. He was selected to perform
in Berlin, as part of ‘Zeitgeist Irland’, an initiative headed by the Irish Embassy in Berlin.
Arts aside, Adam is a community worker and facilitator. He has been involved with MABS, Young Ballymun, Axis, and Ballymun Tidy Towns. He has developed and delivered creative writing workshops to schools, youth clubs, charities, and writing centers. Most recently, he organized a project with Senator Lynn Ruane and the Oireachtas which brought young politicians from the EU and Balkans into Mountjoy Prison to have discussions about peace security with the men. The first of its kind.
About A Ballymun Blend
In collaboration with community members, Adam created, published and launched a beautiful anthology entitled ‘A Ballymun Blend’
The book explores the history, present and future of Ballymun, weaving together stories that resonate with themes of nature, beauty and identity.
The book contains short stories, interviews, opinions and poetry created by the Ballymun community through workshops and discussions, and aims to celebrate the essence of Ballymun storytelling, which is bursting with heart, humour and richness. In creating the book, Adam focused on the present and future of the area, in contrast to much of the art created about Ballymun, which is dedicated to the past. It aims to give Ballymunners an opportunity to tell their own stories!
‘A Ballymun Blend’ was was beautifully illustrated by Ballymun artist Aaron Sunderland Carey and was launched in the Axis in August. Over 120 people attended and were treated with performances from the book’s contributors from Adam himself. Copies of the book are available from The Rediscovery Centre shop, or through Adam himself – [email protected]
